I've always loved the saxophone. When I joined band in 6th grade I desperately wanted to play sax, but my mom nixed that idea…..she said we couldn't afford to rent one and my aunt already owned a flute. Reality is my mom can't stand the saxophone and didn't want to have to put up with me playing it all the time at home đ
So, now I'm all grown up, and I wanna do something fun with my spare time. My husband is a drummer, and we just got him a set for the first time since high school last fall. Now I want to learn to play the instrument I always wanted to play! And, lookie here, I found a website all set up to teach me! Jackpot!
I'm not looking to spend a ton of money, but what should I be looking for when buying a used sax? Do I care if the pads are worn, or is that relatively inexpensive to fix? Do I need to worry about how banged up it is? What brands should I avoid? Should I immediately take it to someone to have it looked over/tuned up?
All advice welcome!

Newbie McNewbersonJanuary 29, 2012 at 3:37 am #10246Hi Judi, the things you mentioned are not a big concern. Pads get worn on any sax that is played after a while and then you simply get them replaced. This is the most common job for a repairman and is not expensive.
A student model from Yamaha or Selmer (Bundy) would be the best bets, but there are many others. When starting out just getting a sax that is in good working order is all you need to do. You will practice on your embouchure, get a good mouthpiece and experiment with several reeds… this is where you can make some big strides in tone production, rather than the brand of sax you get.
I often see even used models of the brands I suggested in Amazon and have an article on that here:

Good Luck

I don't know where you are located, but if you are in western Canada I have a Yamaha YTS 23 tenor that I am going to put on craigslist soon. I bought it used in November and had it tuned up at http://brassandwoodwind.ca/repairs.html in Victoria.
I just got a great deal on a new YTS 62 so I am going to sell the YTS 23. $650 can would do the trick.
