Is this a super-cool song on the Sax or what?!? Lee Allen is on Tenor Sax here with Etta James singing this great song. Maybe someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but Lee Allen was a hard-rubber MP player….listen to that huge, edgy tone he’s getting too. As I’ve progressed with my playing, I’ve come to be more of a fan of hard-rubber MPs myself over metal MPs–nothing against any of the awesome members who have gotten the Guardalas from Johnny…hearing some great stuff from members on those MPs too 🙂 I just think it’s really cool how everyone is starting to find their own ‘voice’ on the Saxophone–we’re all different but that’s what makes it so cool 🙂
May 28, 2016 at 7:03 pm #37643oh ya that’s a big beautiful tone! no wonder he gigged with all the big names in the 50’s rock and roll scene.
I got a chance to meet him here in Vancouver one night when he played with the California rock group “The Blasters”
But stupid me I never did get into what he played on etc.
He also recorded with “The Stray Cats” during this 80’s rockabilly revival.May 28, 2016 at 7:40 pm #37644I didn’t even know this song existed until I heard it on the radio about a week ago. I stopped what I was doing and made sure to write it down on a piece of paper LOL What stands out most to me about most of Lee Allen’s playing is not just his tone, but a lot of the licks/riffs he put into his playing were pretty simple licks. I think he’s a great example of how keeping it simple is what makes things sound good and I’ve had to drill that into my head LOL He’s from Louisiana as you know–just 2 1/2 hours from where I live here in Little Rock–and his playing is still really popular down here, along with the stuff he did with Fats Domino whose from New Orleans. Below is a couple of other songs of his that folks really love down here, I plan to learn to play them. Sometime in the future, you should think about doing “Walking with Mr.Lee”…killing song 🙂
King Curtis and Junior Walker’s stuff is very popular here too, I guess that’s why their stuff has had a big influence on me LOL I really do feel fortunate to live in a region of the US where all of these great players come from, the Southern US. There’s just something really distinct about the way these guys honk on the Saxophone 🙂 When you hear this kind of stuff all the time, it tends to grow on you!
Hey Johnny, it’s funny you mention the Stray Cats…one of my uploads was of a song I decided to play on Tenor Sax “Stray Cat Strut”. The Blues Scale for Improvising worked perfectly over this song. It was going to be one of my first ones I was going to upload here. These next 60-100 days are going to be eating away at me….
