Hi Jeff, this is good stuff. I’m nearly as interested in how we learn this stuff as in actually playing. But I’m thinking, it’s more about knowing HOW to construct scales, chords etc rather than knowing them all?
For me, knowing the 1st five notes of both the major scale and the blues scale gives me the basis for a lot of chords and other scales.
For example, to get a minor 7th chord from the blues scale, I think of the 1st,2nd,5th and 6th degrees of the blues scale: 1,3b,5,7b or the half diminished: 1st,2nd,4th,6th = 1,3b,5b,7b
So as long as I know all the blues scales, I know all the minor 7th and half diminished chords!
Then, I guess it’s a matter of putting into practise playing with the different chords without thinking about it too much! That’s the hard part!
