Hey guys,
I was sitting here at my desk getting everything done for the tax season and listening to my CD set of Honkers and Bar Walkers–the collection is on my to-do list to finish, along with Johnny’s CDs and was curious whose Sax playing does everyone enjoy listening to the most? I love listening to it all; I listen to Johnny’s stuff all the time, there was no way I was going to put my Saxophone picture display and not have a photo of Johnny up on the wall 🙂 For me I really love listening to King Curtis and Junior Walker the most. Seems like every time I listen to a recording from them, I pick up on something that I didn’t notice before and then I think about the different ways I can use what I picked up in my own playing. I think there’s a lot we can learn by listening to other players for sure. Whose Saxophone playing do you enjoy listening to?February 3, 2016 at 3:00 pm #31865Anonymousi can sit in a dark quiet room, close my eyes, concentrate very hard and i can hear a full blown orchestra playing in my head, just as if i was listening to it with headphones on. Am i insane – nope always been like that.
i can’t recall words of songs , but i can play back music in my head, the only problem is i was never taught to play what i can hear in my head. to do that i would have approach music from a different way to conventional learning methods.
Honestly, all i listen to is backing tracks, and how my own sax playing fits in… sad
February 3, 2016 at 5:19 pm #31870I’m the same with you there spxoet, can’t really play what’s in my head either. Every now and then I will bust out a line of a song or some sort and be like “hey, where did that come from”. Haha.
I love listening to the 80’s and those sax solos for sure. I can listen to “Bad to the Bone”, “Urgent”, “Hungry Eyes”, love all those solos for sure!! I also have a lot of pop instrumentals I enjoy listening too, things like “Against all Odds”, Foreigner, Air Supply, Billy Joel. I have a 40 minute ride to and from work so it’s a nice time to sit back relax and enjoy the sax!!
I also have Johnny’s Rock N Roll Saxophonist in my music list as well! Love me some “Mean Mr Senf”. Buncha great jams on that record!!Having this different variety helps cultivate the players we become! I have to say Johnny is definitely my biggest influence on the saxophone! Keep Rockin!! Hopefully I will get to meet him someday, or at least see him perform live! That would be amazing!
