Has anybody played on a Trevor James Horn 88? It just came out recently and I really want one! The only problem is I’m in America and I’d have to order it from Europe, so once I get it I have to stick with it whether I like it or not, haha. Has anyone played this specific horn, and if yes how is its sound and stuff like that?

Actually, there’s an authorized dealer here in North America, Massullo Music. So you don’t have to order a Sax from Europe. I have an T.J. Alto and Tenor I’m paying for this week from them and I can tell you first hand that they know EXACTLY what they’re talking about. Very good people to work with. The model of Alto I’m getting is the Signature Custom, same model Johnny did on his review of the T.J. Alto, here’s a video link to that review. He put a post about in the blog too. http://youtu.be/3K9F_b5jV2U The model of Tenor I’m getting is the SR Tenor. The owner of Massullo Music, Sandro, told me that the SR Tenor actually used to be the Professional model that T.J. sold, but when they released the Signature Custom line of Saxophones then the SR line of Saxophones was considered an “Intermediate” model…but he assures me it is easily pro-model quality. I’ve seen video demos of them and it REALLY hit good with me.
In terms of the T.J. Horn 88, I’ve heard great things about them too….but right now Massullo Music has for sale a T.J. Classic II Tenor that rivals the 88 Tenor you’re talking about, and they have it for sale for a great price—-I seriously considered getting this Tenor before committing to the SR Tenor. I pasted the link from Massullo Music’s home page for Classic II Tenor they have for sale on their website, have a look at it. They are located in Canada (at least it’s here in North America and not Europe!)

I had considered between the 88 and the classic II. I emailed sax.co.uk and asked what the real differences were. They basically said that the 88 has internal rifling, which makes it generally louder, and that it was a technically more professional horn than the classic II. However the Classic II is a more versatile horn but isn’t as much of a high end saxophone like the 88. I’m really leaning more toward the 88 rather than the Classic though.

That sounds awesome–are you seriously looking at getting a T.J. Saxophone? They’re becoming really, really popular here in the U.S. and for good reason. I’m sure the folks at Massullo Music can hook you up with an 88 model–they didn’t have my SR Tenor Sax in stock but it was easy for them to order it.

Oh that would be sweet. I’ll have to email them or something and ask. The one from Sax.co.uk has the saxophone with a case and a decent mouthpiece I think for $1600. He’d have to beat their offer if I were to get it from him instead, haha!

They are nice looking horns. Just saw the video of the 88 on the sax.co.uk site, wow does that sound sweet!! I like the vintage look of it as well. $1700 for a new sax!! Hard to justify a vintage sax for atleast double the amount?? I may head in this direction as well. Looks like a sweet deal for sure!

you can’t argue with anyone wanting a vintage selmer over just about anything but considering M6’s are going for 6-9K you’d be crazy not to at least compare them with the TJ. The guys at Massulo Music tell me they’re seeing more people going for the TJ over the selmers. not not surprising….this is nothing against the selmers of course, only that they are grossly over-priced. if you notice enough difference and that much dough just don’t matter then great.

I def agree with you there Johnny. I wouldn’t knock anyone who was grabbing a M6. If you got the moolah, go for it. I personally don’t have that at my disposal at this time. I would love to play both a M6 and the TJ to really compare them though. I feel that at my age and playing for enjoyment, maybe some parties here and there, the TJ would more than suffice for me. Who knows, maybe down the line I can be 1/2 as good as you and that may change?? One could only hope. If I didn’t hear a noticeable sound difference between the 2, owning a Selmer would then be more of a status symbol. What professional sax player wouldn’t want a Selmer?? It seems most of the greats played a Selmer back in the day!

Yes they did. there were a few other brands but selmer was the most used….mind you, there was way less competition.
But the thing is, we talk about it because we play them, but to a listener it doesn’t matter one bit what kind of horn you’re blowin. The only thing that matters is how you play and sound. Don’t think for a minute that playing with a large band, in a large venue, at a loud volume that you can barely be heard will matter if you’re playing your yamaha, yani, selmer or king. The slight differences they have won’t even come close to being heard.

last week i played a duet with my instructer. I played on my Yamaha and he played on his Selmar.
While we were playing i noticed my sound was more pure comparable to a choir boy singing,
whereas as his sound was more gravelly and had more body but not as pure!
But you have to take into account my setup is more darker for classical stuff, and his
setup was more brighter for Jazz & soul.

Honestly – at this moment in time, i don’t paricularly want that kind of sound. So when it
comes the time i want buy my pro model, its gonna be difficult parting ways with my yamaha!
