😎 Every since Johnny has released “What does it Take” I’ve been pouring over Junior Walker’s songs. “What Does It Take” is one of those songs I think of as a “mega tune” for the Saxophone……..thank you SO MUCH for making that one available Johnny. Since then, I have come across 2 in particular that REALLY hits the spot……..”I’m a Road Runner” is one of them. Have a listen to this one 🙂
Something about these older songs that are SO GOOD on the Saxophone that I don’t think most modern songs can compare to.February 20, 2015 at 5:13 pm #13616Yes, another great one. He had a few more but not many. Cleo’s Mood is an instrumental. He also did These Eyes by the great Canadian group The Guess Who. Another up one is Shake and Fingerpop.
February 20, 2015 at 6:48 pm #13617I was familiar with “These Eyes” because my parents when I was young used to play that record in the house all the time (did I just say “record” and not CD/mp3 file?!?) Those are all great, great songs–Motown and R&B is my very favorite style of playing on the Saxophone and I’m in time to come you can release more stuff along these lines. When I listen to “What Does it Take” or like the song I posted above, it can hear a lot of your playing in those songs. That was awesome that you released “What Does it Take” because I saw you play it on youtube with your band doing a live performance…..you guys sounded great! I saw another video of you guys doing “Memphis Soul Stew”…great licks/riffs! I think the video siad you guys were in San Francisco? (I could be wrong about the location) Do you and your band doing any more touring these days? I would have LOVED to see you guys play live. I’m ordering your CDs/rest of the “The Big Horn” CD collection after I pay off the balance due for my Saxophones, should be any day now 🙂
Thanks much for helping me recover those lost files from my hard drive Johnny, I finally got everything backed up to a new flash drive. Just have a few videos from the Altissimo course left to download to the flash drive…I will also be putting a donation for those very soon too.February 20, 2015 at 7:59 pm #13618hey no problem Michael. the San Fran gig was filmed by someone in the dark corner so it doesn’t sound or look that good.. I wish those were never posted really.
February 20, 2015 at 8:47 pm #13619LOL that you mention about that video of your gig in San Francisco….I pulled down my recent upload of “Samba Pa Ti” because of problems encountered with the neck of the Sax/intonation, so I share similar feelings there for sure 🙂 I could tell something intonation wise was off but couldn’t quite put my finger on it–I even asked my wife to listen to it and she wasn’t sure. I would have uploaded it my my Vito Alto but that got sold within a couple of days of my bro-in-law giving me the LJ Hutchen because that $ was generated to my upcoming purchases from Massullo Music—it wasn’t going to kill me play it for just a few weeks because I knew these Saxophone we’re coming anyway. If you look at the price I’m paying for the model of Alto and Tenor Sax that I chose, combined together, it cost me a pretty penny and it’s not like $ grows on the trees; but I think it will be worth it! I’ll re-upload Samba Pa Ti when the Alto arrives here shortly. I’ve got a couple others of your’s done for Alto Sax but haven’t uploaded them for the same reason…..as well as “The Green Onions” in different keys 🙂
That video you refer to appears to be very “dark and red”–looks like someone did it with a low-grade mobile or something; at least I could see how you were improvising over Memphis Soul Stew. (Improvisation is where my mind is at these days). I was just reviewing it now as I speak and I can’t make out what you’re saying in the mic either. -
